SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Corvallis trips defending state champion Polson

CORVALLIS - The Corvallis softball team beat Polson in a close game Saturday as the defending Class A state champs visited the Bitterroot Valley.

The Blue Devils dropped the Pirates 4-3 behind a strong outing by senior pitcher Kasie Conder. It was the second win of the day for Corvallis, which also beat Ronan in another nonleague game earlier.

Conder held Polson to one earned run on four hits, while striking out 10 and walking one. She and her team improved to 4-0.

“We finally got them,” said Corvallis coach Rich Borden, whose team lost out to the Pirates at state last year. “I told the girls that's a big one, enjoy it, but remember it doesn't matter until May.”

BriAnna Brawley drove in Korie Conder with the winning run, as the Blue Devils scored three times in the sixth inning to rally from a 3-1 deficit.

Korie Conder singled in Megan Auch with the tying run and Markie Gurley led off the frame with a solo home run.

“The sixth seemed to be our inning today,” Borden said.

Caitlyn Vasser and Maggie Gordon each hit doubles for the Pirates and Vassar had an RBI.

Libby sweeps Browning

At Libby, the Loggers freight train chugged its way to another pair of one-sided Western A victories, taking the first game of a twin bill 15-0 and the second 23-0. Each was called after four-and-a-half frames courtesy of the 10-run margin rule.

Game 1 featured a 10-run second frame for Libby. Starting pitcher Brooke Hageness and Taylor Armstrong combined on a two-hitter. Hageness bumped her mark to 6-0.

The Loggers belted 13 hits, including two doubles apiece by Hageness and Alysha Martin. Hageness finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and Martin added a single and an RBI. Nickole Lapka was 2-for-2 with a triple and drove in three.

Libby pelted Browning pitching with 24 hits in the second game, including nine doubles, two by Hageness.

Shelby Barton, Sarah Orr and Kim Klin each collected three RBIs as Libby remained undefeated at 5-0 in the league, 7-0 overall.

At Corvallis, Kasie Conder tossed a three-hitter to start off the Blue Devils' day with a win over the Maidens.

Conder struck out 14, walked three and didn't allow an earned run. She also had a double.

Angie Henderson went 2-for-3 with a two-run double in the sixth, when Corvallis scored four times to break a 1-1 tie.

Amber Bradshaw and Danielle Murray also had RBIs in the sixth for the Devils.

Ronan pitcher Kaylee Larson gave up six hits and had five strikeouts.

At Hamilton, pitcher Nicki Koning settled down after a rough first inning and the Broncs offense stayed steady throughout as Hamilton beat Ronan in a nonleague game.

Koning didn't allow a run after the Maidens jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead. She gave up six hits and finished with 13 strikeouts.

Hamilton scored one run in each inning after the first. The Broncs were led by Koning, who was 2-for-2, and Annie Schultz, who drove in a pair.

Also, Amanda Hood went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

April Soukup had a double and two runs batted in for the Maidens.

At Hamilton, Sarah Newton was a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs scored and one batted in to lead Western A Polson past Central A Hamilton.

The Pirates tallied 16 hits in the contest, while the Broncs had 10. Rochelle Woods added a 3-for-5 day with three RBIs for Polson.

Dakota Peterson had two hits and two RBIs and was the winning pitcher. She struck out seven en route to the complete-game victory.

Hamilton's Nicki Koning went 3-for-4 with a RBI and Kristen Ferguson had two hits and the Broncs' other RBI.

Drew Walter pitched two innings of scoreless ball and picked up the win for Columbia Falls.

Maddie Jones led the Yellowjackets with a double.

Columbia Falls takes two

The Wildkats used a pair of one-run wins to sweep Western A foe Havre.

Amber James doubled and knocked in four runs to lead Columbia Falls to a 9-8 conference win in the opener, while the Wildkats scored three runs on four hits in the nightcap for the victory.

Drew Walter pitched 14 innings for a pair of wins on the mound.

Tia Yaeger went 2-for-3 to lead the way for Columbia Falls in the final game.

Kelli Kelsey was 3-for-4 in the early game and 1-for-3 in the late one to lead Havre.
