CONFERENCE TRACKSTERS DO WELL AT TOP TEN MEET IN MISSOULA!
West's best: Weather cooperates as records fall
It was tough to figure what was better about the 10th annual Russ Pilcher Top 10 meet at Missoula County Stadium: The competition or the weather.
Shows' mark isn't officially a record, since the electronic timing device was off-line and everything was hand-timed. But after coming back later to hold off Polson standout Logan Torgison on the straightaway and win the 800, he'll take the trade-off. “It's fun - it was good to have guys pushing me all the way,” said Shows, who ran 1:58.7 in the 800. “Usually it's about 200 meters and I've made the stagger up. Here I was catching guys on the last corner. “I just followed him (Torgison). I knew he was fast, and he did well in the 1,600. I wanted to just follow him and see if I could out-kick him at the end. And it worked.” Torgison won the 1,600 in a rapid 4:24.4, continuing a territorial pattern of sorts. Shows and fellow Class C athlete Justin Clark of Sheridan swept the 100 through the 800, while the distances went to Class A athletes Torgison and Drew Coco of Whitefish (9:48.2 to win the 1,600). The relays went to AA teams Helena and Helena Capital, and Dalton Sybrant of Class A Corvallis swept the discus and shot put. Libby's Seth Wright won the high jump while Whiltefish's Aaron Tkachyk won the long jump, and Alberton's James Wemple struck another blow for Class C with a victory in the triple jump. Class B was represented by Brian Schenavar of Thompson Falls, who cleared 14 feet, 6 inches to win the pole vault, and Troy's Aaron Palmer, who won the javelin at 185-9. That left the boys' hurdles, which were a Missoula Big Sky sweep: Mike Devlin won the 110 highs in a personal-best 14.8, and Lane Hamilton in the 300 hurdles. It's been a gratifying season so far for Devlin, who fought a knee injury last spring and nearly bagged would seems to be his signature event. “I didn't make state last year and it was kind of tough to take - going from a sophomore placing at state to not placing at all,” said the senior. “It was kind of hard to stay focused after that. But then I ran our first race this year and went 15.2. I was pretty surprised. “Since then I've been working my butt off.” Hamilton was third in the high hurdles, and Big Sky's success continued on the girls' side with Melissa Jenkins, who swept the 200 and 400 - the latter in record time - along with hurdler Lindsey Hall, discus thrower Becka Moderie and vaulter Allison Huguet. Hall got out of the gates fast to hold off Florence's Katie Niemeir in the high hurdles, though the Falcon standout came back to win the 300 hurdles. Jenkins shook off a third-place finish in the 100 meters, behind Townsend's Carrie Myers and Furrer, to run the 400 in 58.3. She had to outduel Sentinel's Chantelle Grey down the stretch. “She does that,” Jenkins said of Grey, who also was third in the 800. “She's a good runner for that. “That's just typical me running the 400, I guess. I hit the wall right around there (the final turn). Definitely Chantelle came on strong and she ran a great race. But I didn't want to lose, I guess, after that 100.” Furrer supplied the biggest surprise, going 17-5 fi in the long jump. Her best jump coming in was 15-10, but she supplanted the likes of Butte's Sarah McGree. “Usually when I have pressure, like Melissa Jenkins or her (McGree), it gives me the drive I need,” said Furrer. Furrer, who struggled with a bad foot last spring, also anchored Hellgate's short relay, which also ran under the meet standard. Polson's long relay kept its string going, improving to 3-0 on this weather-shortened season. The Pirates did it with a couple of their faster kids - Merilee Mowbray and Sierra Pete - out with injuries. They were unbeaten in the 1,600 relay last season. Repeat winners abounded. Jenkins won the 400 for second straight year and the 200 for the third straight time. Missoula Sentinel's Asia Graham won a triple jump crown to go with the one she took home in 2006. Caitlin Stone of Seeley-Swan won the 3,200 a third straight year, though she didn't repeat in the 1,600. That race went to Butte's Keli Dennehy, who won the 800 a year ago. Dennehy finished second to Hamilton's Misha Trotter in the 800 on Tuesday. Butte's Gwenn Abbott matched the meet record in the high jump, clearing 5-4, while Plains' Ashton Vulles won the javelin and Ennis' Taylor McNally decisively won the shot put. All in all it was a surprisingly good day, in more ways than one. “I didn't come in here thinking there'd be any records,” offered Jenkins, who's been battling a sore quadriceps. “I was kind of nervous about getting in shape and what-not. But it ended up working out well.” Russ Pilcher Top 10 meet At Missoula County Stadium Tuesday (Non-scoring meet) BOYS 100 - 1, Justin Clark, Shr, 11.20; 2, Jonny Dilworth, Ftnb, 11.30; 3, Chris VanHorssen, Hel, 11.31; 4, Justin Montelius, MBS, 11.32; 4, Dylan Lang, Hel, 11.33; 6, Andrew Hawe, But, 11.34. 200 - 1, Justin Clark, Shr, 23.2; 2 (tie), Bryce Carver, Dil, and Andrwe Whitaker, Bfk, 23.5; 4, Drew Owens, MBS, 23.7; 5, Nick Trapp, Hel, 23.8; 6, Makenzy Kelch, RSI, 23.9. 400 - 1, Bryce Shows, Enn, 49.8 (meet record; old record 49.9, Skylar Perry, Charlo, 2000); 2, Zach Rowan, Lib, 50.4; 3, Pressley Armstrong, Eur, 50.6; 4, Bryce Carver, Dil, 51.4; 5, David Repke, Sup, 51.6; 5, Andrew Hawe, But, 52.2. 800 - 1, Bryce Shows, Enn, 1:58.7; 2, Logan Torgison, Pol, 1:59.4; 3, Wyatt Lawrence, Ham, 2:00.5; 4, Chris Mai, Vic, 2:00.7; 5, Ben Jessop, Ham, 2:01.2; 6, Jeff Bucholz, Cha, 2:01.4. 1,600 - 1, Logan Torgison, Pol, 4:24.4; 2, Rob Brooks, Snt, 4:28.6; 3, Drew Coco, Wtf, 4:33.6; 4, Paul Abrahamson, Dar, 4:33.69; 5, Ethan Schrader, But, 4:33.7; 6, Chris Mai, Vic, 4:36.8. 3,200 - 1, Drew Coco, Wtf, 9:48.2; 2, Rob Brooks, Snt, 9:49.6; 3, Jake Roske, Hgt, 9:52.3; 4, Paul Abrahamson, Dar, 10:04.3; 5, Dan Hamilton, Snt, 10:09.7; 6, Logan Norris, Dil, 10:12.6. 110 hurdles - 1, Mike Devlin, MBS, 14.80; 2, Matt Miller, Cap, 14.90; 3, Lane Hamilton, MBS, 15.00; 4, Slater Powell, Cor, 15.01; 5, Kyle Beto, Cap, 15.10; 6, Seth Long, Cap, 15.11. 300 hurdles - 1, Lane Hamilton, MBS, 39.9; 2, Dustin Hover, Hgt, 40.0; 3, Drew Owens, MBS, 40.3; 4, Tel Reynolds, Dru, 40.4; 5, Slater Powell, Cor, 40.9; 6, Josh Stuberg, Hel, 41.1. 400 relay - 1, Hellgate (Dylan Lang, Chris VanHorssen, Josh Stuberg, Nick Trapp) 43.5; 2, Big Sky 43.8; 3, Sentinel 44.3; 4, Butte 44.6; 5, Hamilton 45.0, 6, Columbia Falls 45.01. 1,600 relay - 1, Helena Capital (Matt Miller, Seth Long, Dustin Williams, Casey Lamping) 3:27.1; 2, Libby 3:31.5; 3, Hellgate 3:31.6; 4, Charlo 3:33.7; 5, Dillon 3:34.8; 6, Corvallis, 3:35.2.
