Memories aplenty at Archie Roe

May 9, 2009
Northwest Montana A Conference

Memories aplenty at Archie Roe

By DILLON TABISH/The Daily Inter Lake
Published: Saturday, May 9, 2009 1:26 AM CDT
Flathead boys track coach Dan Hodge was recently asked how many years the Archie Roe Invitational track meet has been taking place.

Hodge, having coached over 30 seasons in Kalispell, couldn't think of the answer off the top of his head, so he and his wife, Pat, relied on a tried-and-true resource - T-shirts.

"I have tons of T-shirts," Hodge said. "Every year we get one at Archie Roe, and every time I go to the state track meet I buy a T-shirt. I have hundreds.

"It takes up space, but I can't find a reason to throw away a perfectly good T-shirt just because it's old," he added.

As Hodge discussed his shirt collection and Archie Roe, which is today starting at 10 a.m. at Legends Stadium, Pat dug through full dresser drawers looking for the answer.

There's something about a good, old T-shirt that brings back memories, and Archie Roe has provided many - T-shirts and memories - for athletes and coaches throughout the years.

What started as the Flathead Invitational quickly grew into a highly sought after meet that now features 18 schools and roughly

1,000 athletes. Named after a Flathead High enthusiast who helped at events every way he could, the Archie Roe meet includes a freshman, junior varsity and varsity competition in every event.

"We provide a track meet for the entire track team, and they get to compete at a level that's at their ability," Hodge said.

Roughly the same fleet of schools are returning from previous years - the three Missoula AA schools, crosstown Glacier, and almost every Class A and B team in the Northwest.

"What we're doing is providing opportunities. It is a massive track meet, it does take a lot time, but they can get a lot from this meet," Hodge said.

A lot has happened at Archie Roe worth remembering over the years. There's 2004, the year Flathead runner Zoe Nelson won the 1,600 in 5:07 and followed with a 10:27 in the 3,200, one second off the state record time she would go on to set a few weeks later.

Or 1979, when Flathead's Lexie Miller ran a 14.4 in the 100 hurdles and set the oldest standing meet record.

"Here we go," Hodge said as Pat handed him a T-shirt she found that had a helpful hint on it. "In 2000, it says it was the 26th annual. So that makes it the 35th annual."

Then he paused for a moment to remember that year's Archie Roe.

"In 2000, that was the year my son Steven was a junior," he said.

The first Archie Roe was held in 1974, two years after Hodge moved to Kalispell and began coaching track at Flathead; one year after marrying Pat, and gaining a loyal aid who hasn't missed helping out at more than a handful of his meets since.

At Archie Roe this year, it won't be any different, except maybe for the T-shirt design.
