Glacier shines at A.R.M. By DILLON TABISH/The Daily Inter LakePublished: Sunday, May 3, 2009 1:14 AM CDT WHITEFISH - The Glacier Wolfpack might be planning more track meets in Whitefish from now on.
On a sunny Saturday at the 11th annual A.R.M. Invitational, the Wolfpack girls cruised to a win for the second year in a row, totaling 140 points. Polson, 92, finished second and Whitefish, 61, took third.
The Glacier boys followed suit and won with 106 points. Columbia Falls, 71 1/2, was second and Plains, 55, took third.
The Wolfpack girls 400 relay team, with Kayla Smart, Maddey Frey, Nicole Hall and Rachel Cutler, set a new meet record with a time of 50.09. The old record of 50.42 was set by Whitefish in 2004. Frey, Hall, Cutler and Heather Fraley teamed up for a win in the 1,600 relay as well. Cutler went on to win the long jump, while teammate Lexy Boschee won the high jump.
In the meantime, the Wolfpack boys nearly had a straight flush on the track. Ben Cutler won the 200, Taylor Hart the 400, Jake Glasman the 800, Dan Burfeind the 1600 and Jacob Leininger the 110 hurdles. Glasman, Cutler, Hart and Jake Konen grouped up and posted the winning time in the 1,600 relay, the final event of the day.
Two other meet records fell Saturday. Columbia Falls' Ketti Wilhelm broke the six-year pole vault record by clearing 10-0. The old record of 9-6 was set in 2003 by Kelsey Smith of Columbia Falls and then matched the following season by Havre's Sarah Hislop.
In the girls 100, Deni Fitzgerald of Cut Bank broke the old record of 12.5 set by Courtney Ferda of Whitefish in 2005. Fitzgerald ran a 12.25.
After the girls 800 run, Bigfork's Kayla Carlson wanted to smile, but had to catch her breath first. Using picture perfect form throughout the two-lap race, the junior distance runner used a strong kick in the final 200 meters to win handily and add to her earlier accomplishment in the 1,600.
"I want to be able to smile after a race," Carlson said. "A minute of pain will be worth it if you can smile for a week after your race."
Her winning time in the 1,600, 5:25, ranks as one of the best in the state.
Polson, with a number of girls hampered by a medical dictionary of injuries, had five first-place finishes. Loni Havlovick won both the discus and shot put, Christa Redcrow took first in the triple jump, Breanne Kelley won the 100 hurdles and Sierra Pete took first in the 400.
In the boys 300 hurdles, Flathead senior Duncan Aylor used a little West Point strategy to win.
Aylor stuck with the pack of runners for the first handful of hurdles, but once the straight stretch came, he broke away and went on to win.
"I felt some competition around the corner and I think it helped fire me on," said Aylor, who earned his best 300 time a week after signing a letter of acceptance to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Flathead's Leif Castren won the boys 3,200.
A pair of Whitefish athletes defended last year's winning marks.
Aaron Tkachyk won the long jump for the second year in a row, edging Libby's Seth Wright. Both Tkachyk and Wright hold top marks in the state in the jumps.
Loni Hanson cruised to her second-straight A.R.M. victory in the 3,200.
Whitefish distance runner Drew Coco was scratched at the last minute before the meet due to sickness. But Whitefish distance coach Bill Brist said the state's top 1,600 runner will rest up and hopefully be 100 percent for the final stretch of the season.
Teams got a better understanding of where they stood on Saturday as the season heads into the final month.
Whitefish head track coach Derek Schulz said he was happy to see how competitive the 16-team gathering ended up.
"The caliber of competition has been outstanding. I can't think of an event that wasn't contested at a near-state level," Schulz said. "(A.R.M.) has established itself as a meet where it's not just a tune-up, it's a big meet."
