Top 10 meet athletes to shine
By FRITZ NEIGHBOR of the Missoulian It could be a rainy birthday for the Russ Pilcher Top 10 track and field meet, which turns 11 Tuesday at Missoula County Stadium.
Whether the weather cooperates or not - and forecasts call for 33 degrees with a strong chance of rain when the meet begins at 3:30 p.m. with the field events - the show will go on.
The competition, at least, should be heated: Florence's Katie Niemeir and Missoula Big Sky's Lindsey Hall are both excellent in the hurdles, and less than a tenth-of-a-second separates the boys' 100-meter dash entrants. Frenchtown's Jonny Dilworth and Townsend's Shade Theriault lead with adjusted times of 11.44 seconds. There are many defending champs in the field, including Niemeir in the 300-meter hurdles and Hall in the 100 hurdles. Butte's Keli Dennehy is back to defend her 1,600-meter crown, and Hamilton's Misha Trotter won the 800 last year, though both Dennehy, who won the race in 2007, and Butte Central's Brianna Dudley have run faster so far this spring.
Hellgate's Bobbi Furrer won the long jump last year, but will face a strong challenge from Hall there. In fact the battles between Furrer, Hall and Sentinel's Chantelle Grey in the sprints should be another highlight, especially with talents like Niemeir, Big Sky's Elle Tinkle and Polson's Sierra Pete thrown in.
Ennis thrower Taylor McNally (shot put) and Butte's Gwen Abbott (high jump) are also back to defend their titles.
The boys' lineup is stocked with defending champs as well, like Whitefish distance runner Drew Coco, who won the 3,200 and has the best time in the state this spring. Darby's Seth Garbett is among those who can challenge.
Alberton's James Wemple is back to defend his title against a talented triple jump field that includes Libby's Seth Wright, Frenchtown's Tyler Wilde and Tyler Stenberg of Superior. All three have gone over 43 feet this spring.
Wright won the high jump last year and could have a battle with Plains' Dillon Fryxell in his signature event Tuesday. Both have cleared 6-8.
Troy's Aaron Palmer won the javelin here last year and has the best mark in the state this spring, and Whitefish standout Aaron Tkachyk will go for a second straight long jump title.
And finally there is Corvallis standout Dalton Sybrant, who swept the discus and shot put a year ago.
The senior, who'll throw for Wyoming in college, has a discus mark of 185-10 this spring. Only five high school athletes have thrown farther in Montana, including Dan Tabish, who threw 193-7 at the State AA meet in 1982. That state record still stands.
In all 39 schools will be represented at the unscored meet, including six from Class AA. The Kalispell schools aren't attending but just about everybody else from Alberton to Whitehall - and watch the Trojans' Kellee Glaus in the jumps Tuesday - will compete.
Rain or shine, there will likely be competition: The 2002 Pilcher, after all, was run in the snow. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for students.
Following is the schedule and lineup for the 11th annual Russ Pilcher Top 10 track and field meet, Tuesday at Missoula County Stadium.
Field events schedule
3:30 p.m. - Boys' long jump; boys' high jump; boys' discus; boys' javelin; girls' long jump; boys' pole vault; girls' pole vault and girls' shot put.
4:45 (approx.) - Girls' discus; girls' triple jump; girls' high jump; girls' javelin; boys' shot put and boys' triple jump.
Timed events schedule
4 p.m. (boys' races run first) - boys' 110 hurdles; girls' 100 hurdles; 100; 1,600; 400 relay; 400 dash; 300 hurdles; 800; 200; 3,200; and 1,600-meter relay.
